Application and Enrollment: Huckleberry Cheesecake is available to meet the needs of children ages two months through five years of age, without regard to race, religion, color, sex, or national origin. We reserve the right to accept each child with the understanding that if Huckleberry Cheesecake can not care for them, we ask that the child be withdrawn. Huckleberry Cheesecake requires a completed registration form and a non-refundable application fee that is to be paid during time of enrollment. Also, prior to enrollment, a health certificate with all D.C. immunizations appropriate to the age of the infant or child is required.
Illness Policy: Huckleberry Cheesecake is not equipped to care for sick children. If a child becomes ill during the day, we will isolate the child from the other children and the parent will be notified. When you are called please come to pick up your child within the hour. If you can not be reached, one of the other individuals listed in our files for emergency notification will be contacted. Children who are ill should be kept at home, until they are symptom free for 24 hours. Please DO NOT bring your child to the center if:
It has been less than 24 hours since a fever over 100.3
They are too ill to play outdoors
They have a fever
They have a heavy cough or thick, discolored discharge from their nose
It has been less than 24 hours since an episode of diarrhea or vomiting
They have been treated less than 24 hours with antibiotics for an infectious condition
Medication: At times it may be necessary for your child to receive medication at the center. For the protection of the staff and child, only medication prescribed by a doctor can be administered. A medical authorization form must be filled out before the medication can be administered. Bottles of medication must be labeled with the child's name, the dosage, and instructions for administering the medicine written on the bottle. All medicine must be in its original prescription container.
Discipline: Huckleberry Cheesecake believes in a positive approach to discipline. We offer guidance and direction, not punishment. Children are praised for displaying positive behavior; negative behavior is immediately discouraged and given minimal attention.
At Huckleberry Cheesecake we expect our staff to:
Praise and encourage good behavior
Set realistic limits or behavior expectations which are clear and developmentally appropriate
Be consistent once limits are established
Redirect the child when possible to more positive behavior
Help the child to verbalize feelings and not to act them out inappropriately. In case of special problems, the director will contact the parent so that a joint effort at solving the problem will be made.
Facility Security: Huckleberry Cheesecake is accessible through the main entrance at 1307 19th Street, NW. The entrance to the center is locked at all times. Admittance is gained through visual recognition or via intercom identification if the entrant is not recognized but has been authorized for pick up or visit. In addition, there is a rear door exit to be used in case of an emergency.
Fire Drills: Fire drills are conducted on a regular basis as required by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education and the Fire Marshall. These monthly drills are announced and occur at different times of the day. Teachers follow Huckleberry Cheesecake's approved evacuation plan and procedure for exit routes and headcount confirmation. If an evacuation of the Steptoe Building is required, teachers have been instructed to transport the children to:
Capital Kids 1250 24th Street, N.W. 202-293-1460
In the event of a true emergency or evacuation, parents will receive an email or phone call with information about the status of Huckleberry Cheesecake. Parents may also call 703-965-3468 or 703-967-1005 for additional information.
Shelter in Place: If necessary, Huckleberry Cheesecake is equipped with appropriate supplies to shelter in place at our center for several days.
Snow Policy: Huckleberry Cheesecake will close, due to weather conditions, if the Federal Government is closed for that reason. If the Government decides to close early because of weather on a given day, we will contact all parents to inform of our attempt to close early. If the Government is open but D.C. Public Schools are either closed for the day or have a delayed opening, Huckleberry Cheesecake will open at 10am. An email will be sent to all parents in the morning if there is a change in opening status.
If you are at all unsure of Huckleberry's status, please call 202- 467-4202 to hear a message; we will update it by 6:30am daily.
